Liberals Throw Twitter Tantrum Over Jon Stewart’s TV Appearance

Jon Stewart made a guest appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show Monday night and Twitter leftists are having an absolute meltdown.

In celebration of its first episode with a live studio audience in well over a year, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert brought out Jon Stewart as its first post-pandemic guest. The appearance was much anticipated, at least by Gen Xers who are hungry for nostalgia, but many on the left seem to have forgotten that Jon Stewart is a relic of a time before wokeness.

For those of us who are old enough to remember, there used to be a time when mainstream media merely ‘leaned’ left and people of any political stripe could appreciate satire. Back in the day, the undisputed king of political satire was Jon Stewart; his show aired Monday through Friday for an hour on Comedy Central (one of about 50 channels you could choose from). Yes, he was liberal, but he was 1998-liberal, not 2021-liberal. Stewart was always careful to throw a few self-deprecating jabs towards the Democrats to provide some sense of balance and he often directly called out liberal politicians and pundits when he felt they really needed to be checked. Even right-of-center college students like myself (at the time) could watch the show and laugh along-side their liberal roommates, without necessarily feeling like they were being subjected to outright North Korean style propaganda. Those days are certainly over.

Jon Stewart went on a nearly 10-minute long truth rampage about the origins of the Covid-19 virus, specifically how it so obviously came from the Wuhan lab. Stewart opened up by saying, “I think we owe a great debt of gratitude to science. Science has, in many ways, helped ease the suffering of this pandemic—which was more than likely caused by science.” The confusion and angst felt by the live audience was palpable. Stewart goes on:

“The disease is the same name as the lab…That’s just a little too weird, don’t you think? And then you have some scientists who are like, ‘So wait a minute, you work at the Wuhan Respiratory Coronavirus Lab. How did this happen?’ And they’re like, ‘Mmmm, a pangolin kissed a turtle?… Maybe a bat flew into the cloaca of a turkey and then it sneezed into my chili and now we all have coronavirus.’ Like, come on!”

After some awkward pushback from Colbert, Stewart presses on, pointing out the absurdity of dismissing the ‘lab leak theory’ as a disinformation:

“Oh my god, there’s been an outbreak of chocolatey goodness near Hershey, Pennsylvania. What do you think happened? Like, oh, I don’t know. Maybe a steam shovel mated with a cocoa bean—or it’s the f—ing chocolate factory! Maybe that’s it!”

Finally, after a commercial break, Stewart wraps up the segment by stating, “Can I say this about scientists? I love them and they do such good work but they are going to kill us all.”

The full segment can be seen on YouTube here.

Jon Stewart has obviously not gotten the memo from the progressive left that the ‘Wuhan lab leak theory’ is still to be treated as dangerous right-wing disinformation and nobody is ever, under any circumstances, to question science itself. Maybe he would have gotten a pass if that’s all all he did; perhaps the left would have merely shrugged him off as an out-of-touch dinosaur if he had just taken the initial cues from Colbert and the audience, and immediately changed subjects… but he didn’t.

Instead he committed the cardinal sin of using that platform to point out the absurdity of the left’s position and then added insult to injury by making jokes at their expense. Progressives are certainly not known for their sense of humor and their reactions on Twitter are comically illustrative of that point.
